We finally got our first look at Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Ubisoft ends its presentation with a new world premiere.

What you need to know

  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was revealed at Ubisoft Forward.
  • The game will release sometime in 2022.
  • Coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, Stadia, and Luna.

Ubisoft kicked off E3 2021 with Ubisoft Forward, a presentation packed with updates, debuts, and first looks at many of their exciting releases like Rainbow Six Extraction, Far Cry 6, and Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. But they closed their presentation with an unexpected world premiere. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot took to the stage to reveal Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, a new game based on James Cameron's Avatar.

While no gameplay was shown, the trailer did show off the beautiful and deadly world of Pandora, first introduced in the 2009 movie, Avatar. Many different locales and alien wildlife are shown before we're introduced to a tribe of Na'vi, a species of ten-foot-tall, blue aliens.

Juxtaposed against the natural splendor of Pandora, we are then shown the military, who have stationed themselves onto the planet. It's not long before a Na'vi encounters a hail of gunfire as he runs from pursuing forces. The Na'vi makes a leap of faith onto a flying beast, called a Mountain Banshee. Two Na'vi's join forces to return fire, destroying the enemy chopper and flying out towards the horizon.

We do know that the game is running on a updated version of Ubisoft's Snowdrop engine and will be played in the first person. It's being developed Massive Entertainment (a Ubisoft studio), in collaboration with Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney, but there's still a lot of questions surrounding this game — is it a single-player adventure? Is there multiplayer? Does it follow the plot of the movie? And will it address the unobtainable ore called unobtanium that was obtained during the plot of the first movie? We'll update you once we start to hear more about this upcoming game.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will release in 2022 on the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, Stadia and Luna.
