When it comes to the many choices for Xbox controllers, the new limited-edition 'Serververse' may be the best of 2021.
Microsoft is going all-in on Space Jam: A New Legacy with a new beat'em style game landing on July 15 (via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) and releasing three new Xbox controllers to celebrate. The movie stars basketball legend LeBron James and the whacky Looney Tunes cast for some interplanetary b-ball shenanigans. Or something.
And that's where I come into the picture. While I have never seen the original Michael Jordan-era Space Jam movie and have zero intention to watch the revival version for 2021 (sorry, not sorry), I do collect Xbox controllers. Whether it is the legendary Sea of Thieves controller (with dock), the multiple Gears of War editions (see the Elite controller), those fun Minecraft editions, or that fantastic Cyberpunk 2077 version, I have, for some reason, well over 30 controllers.
The league of extraordinary Xbox controllers has a new member.
But the new Space Jam: A New Legacy Serververse controller, which is of the limited-edition variety, is simply stunning. So, while I may not be a fan of the franchise that it is built on, nor even basketball, there was no way I was missing an opportunity to grab this Tron-like Xbox accessory.
Close up, you can see the attention to detail, but it is the excellent contrast black and teal colorway that caught my eye. The hardware description notes the design is influenced by "the wild details of the "Serververse" – a digital space where LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped by a rogue A.I.." Sure, sounds fine.
Like many special edition controllers, this one features the Space Jam: A New Legacy stamp on the rear battery door. You also get some excellent grip on the handles and that newish dedicated Share button.
Also, a small round of applause of our dear friend the Type-C charging port making an appearance on this controller. That addition lets you direct plug and play to an Xbox or your P.C., and two included A.A. batteries power it all, as expected.
The bad news comes in if you want one.
Being limited edition and part of Amazon's weird Treasure Truck promotion, these are all sold out already. Of course, just like a hard-to-find Xbox Series X, you can still buy one, but you're likely to be dropping at least $100 for it or higher from third-parties, which is much more than the original $70 price tag.
The other two versions: Goon Squad and Tune Squad, are not nearly as great looking, but those aren't limited and can still be found from Amazon or Microsoft.
Anyway, if you are a fan of the series, or like me, an Xbox controller collector, this is one to pick up if you can find it for the right price. And if not, there is no doubt Microsoft will have more limited-edition controllers for other releases, so start saving now. Plus, you can always check our best Xbox controllers for more ideas.
Let me know in the comments which is your favorite Xbox controller of all time!

A new legacy
The worlds of Xbox and Space Jam collide, for marketing. Still, we got some pretty sweet controllers out of it, at least.
