Microsoft to discontinue MSN Sports app for Windows 10

MSN Sports for Windows 10 will be discontinued later this month, but some of its functionality lives on in Windows 11.

What you need to know

  • Microsoft will discontinue the MSN Sports app for Windows 10 on July 20, 2021.
  • The app now shows a message warning about its upcoming end of support.
  • Microsoft has not provided a reason for the end of the Windows app at this time.
  • The Android and iOS versions of MSN Sports appear to be unaffected by this change.

Microsoft's MSN Sports app will be discontinued on July 20, 2021. If you open the app now, you'll see a message warning you about its end of support. Following that cutoff date, you won't be able to install the MSN Sports app through the Microsoft Store.

The in-app message was spotted by OnMSFT. The message doesn't provide a reason for the app being discontinued. It reads:

Important Notice

MSN Sports app will be discontinued on Tuesday, July 20, 2021. The app will no longer be accessible past this date. We appreciate your interest in the app and want to thank you for the time you've spent with us.

This move may be the result of Microsoft focusing on the widgets panel on Windows 11, which includes news, sports, and weather. While some of the functionality of the MSN Sports app lives on within Windows 11, it isn't the same as having a dedicated app.

The message was first seen on a PC running version 4.54.31792.0 of the MSN Sports app. As pointed out by OnMSFT, the iOS and Android versions of MSN Sports don't appear to be affected by this change. We'll have to wait to see if Microsoft clarifies the statuses of its various MSN Sports apps.
