Steam's July update adds additional support for a bunch of controllers

Amazon's Luna controller also gains official Steam support.

What you need to know

  • Valve has pushed a new Steam client update to the stable channel with a number of fixes and improvements.
  • Extended support added for Xbox Series X controllers from PowerA and PDP as well as official support for the Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition.
  • Amazon Luna gains official support, including experimental Bluetooth connectivity.

Steam client updates on the stable channel usually arrive monthly and the July release has some interesting expanded controller support. Steam has an excellent catalog of officially supported controllers, and this month's update adds a new one into the mix as well as expanding support for a couple of others.

First up, owners of the PowerA Fusion Pro 2 and PDP Afterglow Xbox Series X controllers will now be able to use the share button while playing games on Steam. Xbox Extended Feature Support does need to be enabled first, but assuming it is you can hook up either of these controllers and get that share button working for you.

Also on the Xbox controller front is official support now for an old favorite of ours, the Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition. This wired Xbox One controller has been around for a few years now so the fact it escaped official Steam support for so long is a bit of a mystery. But better late than never, as they say.

Folks in the U.S. who have access to an Amazon Luna controller are also now able to join the party as official support is added with this update. Wired use is the preferred method, but Steam has also added support for Bluetooth connectivity, albeit in experimental form for the time being. So it might work, or it might be a hot mess. Try it out and see.

There are also a bunch of fixes as well as platform-specific improvements for both Linux and macOS. Check out the full changelog over on the Steam Blog.
